Prairie Violet features attractive, deep blue-violet flowers with conspicuous white throats and purple nectar guides atop short, leafless stems from mid spring to early summer. They may bloom a second time in fall. The medium green, pinnately-divided foliage is remeniscent of that of larkspur or a crow’s foot.

It is a low-growing, herbaceous perennial with foliage that grows in rosettes. Its relatively fine texture sets it apart from other garden plants with less refined foliage. This plant will require occasional maintenance and upkeep, and should only be pruned after flowering to avoid removing any of the current season’s flowers. Deer don’t particularly care for this plant and will usually leave it alone in favor of tastier treats. It is a larval host plant for several varieties of fritillary butterflies.
