Canadian Milkvetch features large spike-like racemes of creamy white to pale yellow, tubular flowers that rise above the foliage in mid to late summer. The pinnately compound leaves are a medium green in color on red-tinged stems. In late summer, the blooms are replaced by smooth, oval, green, beaked seed pods. When the pod dries, the seeds inside rattle when stems are shaken.

It is an herbaceous perenial with an upright habit of growth. Its medium texture blends into the garden, but can always be balanced by a couple of finer or coarser plants for an effective composition. This is a realtively low maintenance plant, and is best cleaned up in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season. It is a good choice for attracting hummingbirds, butterflies, and birds to your yard. It is a host plant for the western tailed-blue and clouded sulfur butterflies.
