Hoary Vervain features tall, pencil-like spikes of blue-purple flowers towering above the foliage from late spring to fall, blooming from the bottom up for a long flowering display. The ovate, coarsely-toothed leaves remain a grey-green through the season and are covered in small white hairs, from which the plant gets its name.

It is a vigorous, clump-forming perennial with an upright habit. Its medium texture blends into the garden, but can always be balanced by a couple of finer or coarser plants for an effective composition. This is a realtively low maintenance plant, and is best cleaned up in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season. It is a good choice for attracting hummingbirds and butterflies to your yard.
