Compass plant features yellow daisy flowers, similar to sunflowers, on loose spikes on the upper part of the plant from summer to early fall. The foliage is a medium green. The bristly, deeply lobed basal leaves can be up to 2′ long and 1′ wide the become much smaller as they go up the stem. The common name comes from the flowers’ habit of only facing in a north-south direction.

It is an herbaceous perennial with an upright, towering form. Its strikingly bold and coarse texture can be very effective in a balanced landscape composition. This is a realtively low maintenance plant, and is best cleaned up in early spring before it resumes active growth for the season. It is a good choice for attracting butterflies and birds to your yard, but is not particularly attractive to deer who tend to leave it alone in favor of tastier treats.
