This tree is grafted with three varieties intended to extend the harvest season in today’s smaller gardens: Akane, a sweet, rich, early season dessert apple, excellent for fresh eating and drying, ripening August to September; Honeycrisp with its large red, crisp, deliciously sweet fruit, well-suited for fresh eating and cooking, and equally suited for pressing for cider, ripening in September; and Liberty, with red, crisp and refreshing, juicy fruit, ready to harvest in October.
This 3-Tier Combination Apple Espalier features showy clusters of lightly-scented white flowers with shell pink overtones along the branches in mid spring, which emerge from distinctive pink flower buds. It has forest green deciduous foliage. The pointy leaves turn yellow in fall. The fruits are showy red apples carried in abundance from early to mid fall. The fruit can be messy if allowed to drop on the lawn or walkways, and may require occasional clean-up.
