Mother’s Day is fast approaching! It can be hard to come up with creative ideas for Mom. Instead of the usual card and floral arrangement, we thought it would be special to create an everlasting memory through a hands-on day of gardening with Mom. Plus, perennial garden plants come back every year—much better than a bouquet that will wither and die in a few days. We have compiled these five fun activities, ranging from quick-and-easy to a bit more labor-intensive, depending on the ages of everyone involved. Let’s get the family out in the garden with Mom, enjoying some fresh spring air!

1. Give the Gift of Gardening: Create a Butterfly Garden
Many children have been celebrating Earth Day in school, learning about the diverse world we live in and how to protect its many ecosystems. There is no better way to take these school lessons and apply them in real life than by creating a special garden with Mom. Butterfly gardens are not only beautiful, but they also act as pollinator gardens. Bees and butterflies flock to certain flowers; as they move pollen from plant to plant, they perform an essential task that nature needs to thrive. Without pollinators, our world would literally cease to exist as we know it; the effects would ripple through ecosystems, causing a massive change in diversity.
All seriousness aside, the delight of seeing butterflies and bees hop from bloom to bloom in your garden is an impressive wonder on its own and a delight for all ages. Here are some key plants to purchase to begin a beautiful butterfly garden with the Mom in your life:
- Native plants to Iowa. Pollinators have evolved to rely on their native pollen. Visit our nursery for more information on Iowa native plants. (Some listed below are native, as well.)
- Bee Balm
- Coneflower
- Joe Pye Weed
- Butterfly Milkweed
- Goldenrod
- Elderberry

2. Make it a Date: Have a Garden Center Shopping Spree With Mom
There’s nothing more fun than shopping with your Mom! Bring her out for a day at the garden center to get in the excitement of the gardening season. Aside from taking a tour of our greenhouses–the paradise that we call home–we have plenty of unique photo opportunities. Take a lasting picture of you and mom near our amazing topiaries or many waterfall features we have on-site. A visit will also allow a first-hand look at the many trees, shrubs, and perennials we have to offer. Our knowledgeable and dedicated staff will be happy to show you around and get you gardening!
3. Create a Garden Water Feature With Mom
Giving the gift of gardening with mom doesn’t necessarily require us to dig in the dirt. There are numerous, simple ways to create gorgeous garden water features. Some larger water features are complex to create, but if you want to keep it simple while still enjoying the soothing sound of trickling water, then consider adding these water elements to your yard. Mom will love them!
- Birdbath: Teach the kids all about bird species as they flock to your yard.
- Natural stone fountains: Some are quite large, but there are smaller versions that are suitable for patio spaces.
- Solar-powered water fountains: The way to go when you don’t want to worry about electricity!

4. Give a Gift Card
Sometimes Mom wants quality time to herself. Trust us; it can be the best gift ever for a tired, overworked mother! Consider giving her a gardening gift card that she will use on a day out by herself, and when she comes home with all her garden goodies, you can help with the planting. Quality time for both you and Mom—it’s a win-win!
5. Plant Some Veggies With Mom
Spring veggie gardening in Iowa is so satisfying, and it’s such a fantastic lesson for our children to learn how to grow their own produce. Let your child pick out their favorite veggie seeds and then get planting! Here are a few ideas to get you started; perhaps this will expand the taste buds of those picky eaters!
- Green beans
- Radishes
- Lettuce
- Kale
- Broccoli
- Garlic
- Onions
- Carrots
- Tomatoes
